The rapid advancements in technology have ushered in a remarkable era of innovation for humanity, and one of the standout developments in this landscape is artificial intelligence, commonly known as AI. The influence of AI has progressively extended its reach into various facets of our lives, and its potential for positive impact is particularly noteworthy in the realm of airport operations, with a specific focus on Indonesia.

Muhammad Awaluddin, the Chief Executive Officer of PT Angkasa Pura II (Persero), emphasized that in the present-day, the integration of AI within the national airport sector has become an inevitability. He underscored the pioneering role of AP II as the first airport operator in Indonesia to actively engage in discussions regarding the practical utilization of AI, specifically within the context of air transportation, and more pertinently, airport operations.

“At the initial stages of implementing AI within airport operations, AP II is committed to fostering collaboration and resource sharing,” Awaluddin remarked in an official statement released on Friday, the 8th of September, 2023.

Dwi Ananda, serving as the Executive General Manager of Soekarno-Hatta Airport, elaborated on the manifold advantages that AI can bring to the table. He stressed that the adoption of AI technologies has the potential to elevate the standards across diverse dimensions of airport functionality, encompassing operational excellence, facility enhancements, service quality, and commercial viability.

Dwi provided a tangible illustration of the transformative impact of AI, particularly in optimizing the flow of flight operations and streamlining passenger movements within airport terminals. Moreover, he expounded on AI’s utility in facility management.

“While our current infrastructure is fortified with an array of technological solutions, our aspiration through AI is to redefine the efficiency and efficacy of our facilities, spanning areas such as maintenance protocols, energy consumption optimization, and the delivery of personalized services,” elucidated Dwi.

In the realm of commercial operations, the integration of AI promises a tailored experience for customers transiting through AP II airports. Dwi elucidated that the power of artificial intelligence lies in its capacity to comprehensively and effectively analyze multifaceted aspects, obviating the need for laborious data sorting, replication, and processing.

Turning to the intricacies of airport operations, Dwi highlighted the potential of AI in optimizing the allocation of slot times, a crucial facet of operations at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, which holds the distinction of being Indonesia’s largest aviation hub.

He underscored that the airport typically manages a staggering 1,300 departure and arrival slot times daily. Historically, the analysis of this data has entailed substantial time and resource investments.

“If we harness the capabilities of advanced Artificial Intelligence analytics for this pivotal analysis, we can anticipate expedited outcomes characterized by high precision, thereby bolstering our capacity to make astute decisions, ranging from the allocation of flight timings to accommodating specific requests, ultimately augmenting the overall efficacy of flight operations,” elucidated Dwi.

Furthermore, the broad applications of AI extend to enhancing the quality of services rendered to airline passengers. Through the deployment of advanced AI analytics, AP II aims to undertake passenger sentiment analysis with precision.

Dwi outlined that this approach enables AP II to discern, with remarkable accuracy, the specific services, amenities, and retail offerings that airline passengers require and prefer during their sojourns at the airport.

This concerted effort aligns with the overarching objective of Soekarno-Hatta Airport, which aspires to tailor services to the unique preferences and needs of each and every passenger, thereby offering a highly personalized airport experience.
