The Sinovac vaccine is the first to receive an emergency use permit (EUA) from the Indonesian Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) for use in children aged 6-11 years.
Sinovac vaccines that can be are CoronaVac, which produced by Sinovac Life Science Co and Ltd China. Another COVID-19 Vaccine that applicable is Sinovac produced by PT Bio Farm.
After Sinovac, BPOM will soon give permission for two other vaccines. Those are Pfizer and Sinopharm.
This vaccine evaluation process is carried out by BPOM together with a team of experts. The process will involve members of the National Committee for Drug Assessment, ITAGI (Indonesian Technical Advisory Group on Immunization), and other relevant clinicians.
Recomendations from Ikatan Dokter Anak Indonesia
The Indonesian Pediatrician Association (Ikatan Dokter Anak Indonesia) also issued a recommendation regarding the Covid-19 (Coronavac) vaccination for children aged 6 years and over. There are three things that needs to be consider
- It is given intramuscularly at a dose of 3ug (0.5 ml). This vaccine is given twice with an interval of four weeks between the first dose to the second dose
- The vaccine is not recommended for children who have or have contraindications to the following:
- primary immune deficiency
- Uncontrolled autoimmune disease
- Gullian Barre syndrome disease
- Transverse myelitis
- Acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis
- Has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy/radiotherapy
- Receiving immunosuppressant or severe cytostatic treatment
- Having a fever of 37.50 centigrade or more
- Recently recovered from Covid-19 in less than 3 months
- After other immunizations less than 1 month
- The child or adolescent is pregnant
- Has hypertension and diabetes mellitus
- Has chronic diseases or uncontrolled congenital disorders
- However, children with intense cancer maintenance phase, or are suffering from chronic or autoimmune disease but under control, can follow the general immunization guidelines by consulting the doctor in charge of the patient first.
Children Vaccination in US
For consideration, The United States through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a permit for the Covid-19 vaccine with Pfizer for children aged 5-11 since 29 October 2021. years on Friday (29/10). The FDA allows a 10 mg dose of Pfizer vaccine for children, which is lower than the dose for older age groups.
Children vaccination is becoming more crucial as offline schools starts to begin. From economny sectors, especially in Indonesia, Departement stores and toursm destination still can not allowed Children under 12 to enter their places. Hopefully, with this regulations, vaccinations for children could be done effectively.
