As technology continues to revolutionize various aspects of daily life, its impact on transportation has been particularly transformative. One of the latest innovations introduced by Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) is the face recognition system, a cutting-edge technology designed to enhance the boarding experience for passengers traveling by train. With this system, passengers no longer need to present physical boarding passes, electronic passes, or even identification documents. All they need is their face.
This new face recognition service aims to simplify the entire boarding process. Once passengers register, they only need to scan their faces at the boarding gate, and the system will automatically verify their identity. No more fumbling for tickets or IDs.
“Face recognition boarding gates are equipped with cameras that identify and validate a person’s identity by scanning their face. The system is integrated with train ticket data and customers’ vaccination status. The verification process takes just one second, significantly reducing queues and making boarding much faster,” explained Anne Purba, Vice President of Public Relations at PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), in an official statement on Tuesday (September 10, 2024).

The Benefit
This new system provides numerous benefits, especially for passengers on long-distance journeys. Not only does it streamline the boarding process, but it also eliminates the need for multiple documents. Passengers who register for the service will be able to board simply by scanning their face, making travel more convenient.
Moreover, the system is designed with security in mind. The integration with passengers’ vaccination status ensures that only those who meet the travel requirements can proceed. With travel becoming more digitized, the face recognition system represents a significant step forward in ensuring a safe and smooth journey for all passengers.
As KAI continues to embrace technology, this face recognition system is just one example of how the company is leveraging innovation to improve the passenger experience. More stations are expected to adopt the technology soon, further expanding the convenience of this cutting-edge boarding system across Indonesia.
For passengers looking to make their train journeys more seamless, registering for KAI’s face recognition system is a simple and beneficial process that promises a hassle-free boarding experience.
