For a few hours, one of Indonesia’s busiest tourist gateways will slow down. Not because of restrictions, but by choice. In Labuan Bajo, the local government is continuing its Jumat Hening program, aligning it with the observance of Good Friday 2026 on April 3. The initiative goes beyond religious reflection. It is also designed to give the environment a break from daily activity and create a quieter, more orderly atmosphere.
The policy comes from the government of West Manggarai Regency, which has already introduced a nine-hour period of reduced activity during Jumat Hening across Labuan Bajo area. The focus is simple. Cut down movement. Reduce noise. Let nature breathe, even if just for a while.
“This program is part of the region’s effort to preserve the environment. The goal is to give nature time to rest from vehicle activity and to create a more peaceful and orderly atmosphere,” said Regent Edistasius Endi.
This is not a new idea. The program continues what was started the previous year. At its core, it is about building awareness. Encouraging people to think about pollution. About how daily habits impact the environment.
For one full day, activity will be adjusted. Vehicle use will be limited. Noise levels will be reduced, especially during two key periods. The first runs from 06:00 to 11:00 WITA. The second continues from 14:00 to 18:00 WITA.
The government is also asking residents to do more than just stay off the roads. People are encouraged to limit time outside, reduce electricity consumption, and cut down on plastic waste. Even small things matter. Turning off loudspeakers. Walking to places of worship instead of driving.
Several roads will be temporarily closed to support the program. These include the Yos Adu intersection through Langka Kabe to Sernaru and Lancang intersection, the Wae Mata intersection through Langka Kabe to the Caci Statue, and the Prundi intersection to Lamantoro intersection.

At the same time, the government is making sure religious activities remain a priority. Both Good Friday services and Friday prayers will receive special attention during the implementation.
There is also a long-standing tradition that continues alongside this moment. The live Stations of the Cross, often referred to as tablo, has been held in Labuan Bajo for several years. It takes place on Good Friday and is performed on public roads. The event draws thousands of Catholic participants each year.
For a day, the rhythm of the city changes. Slower. Quieter. More intentional. And for many, that pause carries meaning beyond the moment itself.
