The government reported the addition of 12,001 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on Sunday (31/1/2021). The total number of confirmed patients is currently 1,078,314 cases of COVID-19.
DKI has again become the province with the highest addition of COVID-19 cases as of January 31, 2021, namely 3,474, followed by West Java with 2,848 cases. and Central Java with 1,115 cases.
Positive cases increased from 12,001 to 1,078,314. Patients recovered increased by 10,719 to 873,221. Patients died increased by 270 to 29,998. Today, 44,658 specimens were recorded throughout Indonesia, while the number of suspects was 73,652.
Meanwhile, the UK government offers worldwide assistance to find new variants of coronavirus while maintains that a new variant first spotted in the country does not necessarily mean that it originated in the UK.
New variants of the virus that causes Covid-19 are also identified in South Africa and Brazil. There are concerns that the new mutants can spread more easily than the original virus, although it has not been scientifically proved that they are deadlier or more resistant to vaccine.
It says quickly identifying new variants is critical because they threaten to make treatments and diagnostics ineffective, and to make the pandemic harder to control. The collaboration may involve Indonesia’s Research and Technology Ministry and Jakarta-based Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology who already have the capability to genome sequence viruses.
