The Regional III Denpasar division of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued a noteworthy advisory for both tourists and traditional fishermen in the Nusa Dua tourist area of Badung Regency, Bali, regarding the potential risk of high sea waves reaching heights of up to 2.5 meters. This warning is in effect for the period of May 28th to May 29th, 2023.
According to Cahyo Nugroho, the Head of BMKG Regional III Denpasar, it is essential for fishermen and those involved in maritime tourism to exercise caution and remain vigilant in light of the high potential for sea waves in the Nusa Dua region.
The anticipated wind speeds are expected to reach up to 38 kilometers per hour or 20 knots, with the wind originating from the east-southeast direction. It is crucial to note that Nusa Dua is geographically situated adjacent to the Badung Strait, which lies on the eastern side of Bali.
BMKG’s forecast indicates that the sea wave height in the Badung Strait may reach up to 2.5 meters during this period. Nusa Dua, being a renowned maritime tourism destination as well as a fishing area, necessitates careful attention to these weather conditions. The Badung Strait serves as a vital transportation route, connecting Sanur Denpasar to Nusa Penida Island in Klungkung Regency and facilitating ferry crossings to Lombok Island.
The specific weather patterns causing these circumstances are attributed to the sea surface temperature within the Bali region, which ranges between 26 to 30 degrees Celsius. Additionally, moist air has been observed concentrated from the surface layer up to the 850-millibar level or 3,000 meters. Consequently, BMKG advises individuals to exercise caution, as these factors contribute to the current weather conditions.
In a broader sense, the overall weather forecast for Bali suggests partly cloudy to cloudy conditions. It is worth noting that the southern waters of Bali may experience significantly higher sea waves, with estimates reaching up to three meters in height.
BMKG emphasizes the potential risks associated with sailing under these circumstances. They specifically mention the thresholds for safe navigation for different types of vessels. For instance, fishermen’s boats should exercise caution if the wind speed exceeds 15 knots, accompanied by wave heights surpassing 1.25 meters. Similar precautions apply to barges, with wind speeds exceeding 16 knots and wave heights surpassing 1.5 meters. Furthermore, ferries should be cautious if wind speeds exceed 21 knots, coupled with wave heights above 2.5 meters.
