The tragic death of Brazilian climber Juliana Marins (27) while attempting to summit Mount Rinjani recently drew international attention and forced authorities to close the hiking trails for a period. Now that these trails have reopened, officials hope similar tragedies can be prevented by reinforcing the rules, especially for foreign hikers, as outlined in the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for Mount Rinjani Climbing issued in 2022.

The complete SOP can be found on the official Mount Rinjani National Park website. Visitors can scroll down the homepage to find the section titled “Info Graphics, Ebook & Video Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani,” where the “E-book SOP Trekking Gunung Rinjani National Park” is available.

This SOP is formally set under Decree NUMBER: SK.9/T.39/TU/KSA/3/2022 from the Head of the Mount Rinjani National Park Office. It details general guidelines for all hikers and special rules for both domestic and foreign hikers.

Foreign climbers face specific requirements to ensure safety and order. All foreign visitors planning to hike Mount Rinjani must register. This process keeps administrative records accurate, ensures compliance with legal standards, and tracks the activities of each hikers.

To start, foreign hikers must hire a licensed Trekking Organizer (TO) or tour guide service (with PB-PJWA license). Each group must also be accompanied by at least one certified guide (one guide per six climbers) and supported by local porters (one porter for every three climbers, carrying up to 25 kg). These guides and porters must hold official permits issued by the Head of the Mount Rinjani National Park.

Online registration can be done directly by the TO, by the service provider, or by the hikers themselves (with approval from the TO), using valid identification. Registration is open daily from 05:00 to 20:00 WITA.

Once registration data is complete, the system will confirm if quotas are available and issue payment instructions. Payment should be transferred to the account listed in the eRinjani application. After payment, hikers will automatically receive an ePrint/booking code sent to their registered email.

Additionally, hikers must buy accident insurance from a company appointed by the National Park to ensure safety during the hike.

Before check-in at the entrance gate, several documents must be shown: the ePrint/booking code, a valid ID, a health certificate, and a stamped declaration letter confirming no history of serious illness. Climbers also need to download the Peduli Lindungi app and follow general safety protocols.

All hikers must attend a mandatory briefing at a designated location where they will receive information through videos, photos, booklets, or other materials. Each climber must also show their gear and potential waste items to be checked against a provided list. Items not meeting the requirements must be left behind and collected within three days after the hike.

Repacking must take place in special repacking zones. Only after completing all verification can hikers continue their hike as scheduled.

During the trek, hikers are required to:

  • Keep their ePrint and the waste checklist;
  • Carry personal trash bags;
  • Immediately report any incidents, getting lost, or injuries to the National Park Call Center or staff, including photo or video evidence.

hikers must also strictly follow the SOP, respect local cultural wisdom, and hike according to the date on their ePrint. When finishing, hikers must check out at the exit gate, verify their hike completion, and hand over collected trash.

The park offers check-in services from 07:00 to 15:00 WITA and check-out services until 17:00 WITA, unless special conditions arise.

Rescheduling is possible under certain conditions: it can be done once within the same year, depends on quota availability, must match the hikers’ registered identity, and must be arranged at least one day before the original hike date. Refunds will only be provided in case of sudden, incidental trail closures.

By carefully following these guidelines, hikers —both local and foreign—can help ensure Mount Rinjani remains a safe and welcoming destination for everyone, while tragedies like that of Juliana Marins never happen again.
