The LRT Jabodebek (Light Rail Transit) system is set to introduce a fare of Rp1 during its upcoming soft launching or joyride phase, which is scheduled to commence on July 12, 2023. This decision marks a departure from the initial plan of providing free rides to passengers during this introductory period.

According to Kuswardoyo, the Manager of Public Relations for the LRT, the operator had originally intended not to impose any charges during the soft launching phase. However, technical challenges related to the electronic ticketing system have necessitated a change in plans.

Kuswardoyo explained that the existing electronic ticketing system at Jabodebek LRT stations is unable to process transactions with a value of Rp0 during the tap-in process. Consequently, a nominal amount of Rp1 will be required upon entry to ensure the system functions smoothly.

“The soft launching period will operate under our normal operational scheme, with tap-in and tap-out procedures at the stations. This approach is part of our strategy to familiarize the public with the payment system of the Jabodebek LRT,” highlighted Kuswardoyo during a recent interview.

Moreover, Kuswardoyo elaborated that the soft launching phase of the Jabodebek LRT will span from July 12 to August 15, 2023. Throughout this period, a limited number of passengers will be accommodated on a daily basis. However, specific details regarding the exact passenger capacity were not disclosed.

To provide interested individuals with the opportunity to experience the Jabodebek LRT, Kuswardoyo emphasized the need to register through the official social media account @lrt_jabodebek once the registration process becomes available.

Prior to this announcement, the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) confirmed that there would be no adjustments to the original timeline for the operationalization of the Jabodebek LRT. According to Adita Irawati, the spokesperson for Kemenhub, the LRT services are scheduled to commence on August 18, 2023, as previously planned.

Irawati further highlighted that a trial run of the Jabodebek LRT will precede the official start of operations, commencing on July 12, 2023. This trial period is expected to last approximately one month. During this trial phase, the public will have the opportunity to utilize the Jabodebek LRT services free of charge between the hours of 06:00 and 22:00 WIB.

With the introduction of the Rp1 fare during the soft launching period, the Jabodebek LRT aims to overcome the technical limitations of its ticketing system and ensure a smooth transition to regular operations. This comprehensive approach demonstrates the LRT’s commitment to providing an efficient and accessible transportation solution to the residents of Jabodebek and beyond.
