The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) is embarking on a strategic initiative to enhance railway safety by introducing elevated tracks for trains, presenting a long-term solution to reduce level crossings and mitigate the rising incidence of train accidents.

Budi Karya Sumadi, the Minister of Transportation, emphasized the significance of elevated tracks as a viable option to curtail train accidents frequently occurring at level crossings. This proactive approach aims to address safety concerns in bustling urban areas, including Bandung, Semarang, Solo, Yogyakarta, and others. Budi Karya expressed optimism about the potential development of double-double tracks in these regions, similar to the existing infrastructure in Jakarta.

“In the long run, our vision is to have elevated tracks on busy routes. Jakarta, for instance, already boasts double-double tracks,” highlighted Budi Karya during a statement on Friday (19/1/2024).

The Minister disclosed plans to initiate elevated track construction, with an initial focus on major cities. This strategic move aligns with a comprehensive, long-term vision, acknowledging the considerable time and investment required for such a transformative undertaking.

Adita Irawati, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Transportation, shed light on the meticulous planning involved in selecting suitable locations for elevated track construction. Traffic density emerged as a key consideration, with the Ministry keen on identifying areas where elevated tracks would have the most significant impact.

Adita highlighted ongoing efforts beyond Jakarta, citing the construction of elevated railway tracks in Solo as a noteworthy example. The design of elevated tracks prioritizes minimal disruption to other vehicular traffic, showcasing a selective and thoughtful approach to infrastructure development.

This ambitious project, with its focus on enhancing safety and addressing traffic challenges, reflects the Ministry’s commitment to fostering sustainable and efficient transportation solutions. As the initiative progresses, it is poised to redefine railway infrastructure, ensuring a safer and more seamless travel experience for commuters.
