Amid Indonesia’s vibrant and diverse landscape, a new warning from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has sparked concern. The agency has recently announced that Indonesia is at risk of experiencing a megathrust earthquake, a powerful seismic event that could have devastating consequences.

Megathrust earthquakes are among the most severe, capable of triggering massive earthquakes and enormous tsunamis with far-reaching impacts. This type of earthquake occurs due to the movement and collision of tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface, generating immense pressure that is eventually released as seismic energy.

Indonesia’s geographical position makes it particularly vulnerable to such events. The country sits at the convergence of three major tectonic plates, increasing its susceptibility to significant seismic activity.

According to Daryono, the Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, the potential for a megathrust earthquake is most prominent in the Sunda Strait and the Mentawai-Siberut region. He noted that these areas could experience tremors with magnitudes ranging from 8.7 to potentially as high as 9.

Here’s a breakdown of regions in Indonesia that could face significant impacts if the anticipated megathrust earthquake occurs:

West Coast of Sumatra:
Sumatra is particularly at risk, with the megathrust fault extending along its western coastline. The region could experience earthquakes with magnitudes up to 8.9 and tsunamis that could reach several meters in height. High-risk areas include:

  • Aceh: Banda Aceh, Meulaboh, and other coastal cities.
  • North Sumatra: Medan, Sibolga, Nias.
  • West Sumatra: Padang, Pariaman, Mentawai Islands.
  • Bengkulu: Bengkulu, Mukomuko, Enggano.
  • Lampung: Bandar Lampung, Kalianda, Lampung’s coast.

Southern Java:
The southern coast of Java is another area of concern. This region’s extensive coastline makes it prone to significant seismic activity and potential tsunamis. High-risk areas include:

  • Banten: Anyer, Carita, Pandeglang.
  • West Java: Pelabuhan Ratu, Pangandaran, Cilacap.
  • Yogyakarta Special Region: Yogyakarta, Bantul, Kulon Progo.
  • Central Java: Kebumen, Purworejo, Cilacap.
  • East Java: Pacitan, Trenggalek, Banyuwangi.

Nusa Tenggara:
The southern regions of Nusa Tenggara also face potential threats from megathrust earthquakes. Both Nusa Tenggara Barat and Nusa Tenggara Timur could experience significant seismic events and tsunamis. Areas at high risk include:

  • West Nusa Tenggara: Mataram, Lombok, Sumbawa.
  • East Nusa Tenggara: Kupang, Flores, Sumba.

North Sulawesi:
North Sulawesi is vulnerable due to megathrust activity off its northern coast, which could lead to major earthquakes and tsunamis. High-risk areas are:

  • Bitung
  • Manado
  • Bolaang Mongondow

Maluku:
The Maluku region, particularly around the Banda Sea, is also at risk. The potential for significant seismic activity and tsunami waves could impact:

  • Ambon
  • Ternate
  • Banda Islands

Daryono urges the public to remain calm and continue their daily activities, such as fishing, trading, and visiting beaches, while BMKG remains committed to providing timely and accurate information on earthquakes and tsunami warnings.

For further updates and safety information, the BMKG is actively monitoring the situation and will provide guidance as needed.
