Telkomsel has officially ended the 3G network in all its services. This decision was taken because they reasoned that the internet is actually better using a 4G or 5G network.

Telkomsel Network Director Nugroho, at the Telkomsel office, Wednesday night (6/4/2022), explained, “Now we have 2G, 3G, and 4G, no need for duplication. Voice can be 2G, 3G data is not reliable, better using 4G or 5G. “

Nugroho said that the existing resources could focus on developing useful use cases to support digitization in the country.

Furthermore, the decision to turn off 3G is also related to a very limited spectrum, to provide a more optimal consumer experience.

“A very limited spectrum can be utilized properly. So that it can provide a maximum, competitive customer experience,” he said.

The Director-General of SDPPI of the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, Ismail, said the same thing. According to him, Telkomsel’s decision will make people enjoy better services.

He said the discontinuation of 3G can be carried out in a measurable and directed manner. This includes asking for socialization with people who are still users of the network.

“If there is a need for data, a program is considered by Telkomsel to encourage the community that currently cellphones are still using 3G.

Telkomsel itself is gradually upgrading its 3G to 4G services. It is hoped that all will be completed by the end of this year.

When asked about the government’s target for this 3G termination policy, Ismail said the government returned the decision to the operators. Spectrum utilization is the operator’s authority.

“If the government releases the decision to the operator. The policy is technology-neutral, the operator’s spectrum utilization is the authority to improve what technology will be used,” he said.
