The Covid-19 pandemic is still haunting. The latest government data shows an increase to 1,242 new cases in Indonesia. The increase was due to the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 variants. Regarding this increase in cases, the Ministry of Health reminded the public not to panic too much.
Mohammad Syahril as Spokesperson for the Ministry of Health appealed to the public not to panic in facing this condition. According to him, the increase in cases that occurred in the last few weeks was influenced by the emergence of new variants of Omicron BA.4 and BA.5.
“The rise and fall of this case are because we are still in the COVID-19 pandemic phase,” said Syahril in an online discussion held by the Merdeka Barat 9 Forum, Thursday (16/6/22).
However, he is optimistic that the government will be able to control conditions so that there will not be a significant spike. So that it doesn’t happen like the spike in cases of omicron and delta variants a few months back.
He added that the average positive number of the spike in cases of this new variant of Covid-19 in Indonesia was still below the WHO standard. Whereas, the WHO standard is 5 percent.
“The WHO standard is below 5 percent. We are still at 2.15 percent for the positivity rate. Even though there is currently an increase in cases, the hospitality rate is still low,” he explained.
Meanwhile, the death rate is still low. This shows that the increase in cases may be due to the new variants of Omicron BA.4 and BA.5. not as bad as the omicron variant, let alone delta.
“Our control is how individuals are not infected and if they are infected, they can self-isolate. Thus, reducing the number of hospitalizations, except for those with comorbidities to control their comorbidities,” he said.
Syahril also added that currently, the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) has issued a circular to all health offices and hospitals to be aware of a spike in Omicron cases. This is to prepare all resources for providing services.
“From upstream to downstream, our system has actually been formed. So we carry out long tracing and tracking. Then the hospital with 2 years of experience, we have better readiness, starting from human resources, infrastructure, medical equipment, PPE and the system, ” he said.
