The lifting of the COVID-19 pandemic status has brought a significant boost to Indonesia’s tourism sector. One of the key beneficiaries is the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), which is experiencing a remarkable surge in tourist activity, especially over the weekends. This new trend has transformed regular weekends in DIY into what feels like extended holidays, filled with bustling tourist activity and vibrant local life.
Singgih Raharjo, the Head of the DIY Tourism Office, highlighted this new trend that emerged after the pandemic. “I think there’s a new phenomenon in Yogyakarta after the COVID-19 pandemic. Every weekend feels like a long holiday,” he said on Friday (24/5/2024).
Despite being just a weekend, DIY has been welcoming an influx of tourists. This surge isn’t limited to weekends; during weekdays, tourism operators must also be prepared to cater to visitors. Singgih stressed the importance of continuous readiness to welcome tourists at any time, not just during long holiday periods.

He emphasized the shift from mass tourism to quality tourism, urging tourism operators to provide enriching experiences for visitors.
“Since we are moving towards quality tourism, tourists will gain more experiences beyond just mass tourism,” Singgih explained.
Traditionally, mass tourism involved visitors coming, taking a stroll, snapping photos, eating, and leaving, which often resulted in less value gained from the visit. Singgih suggested enhancing the tourist experience with storytelling and additional narratives at tourist spots. Adding shopping areas can also positively impact the economy and culture.
“Readiness is essential, whether on weekdays, weekends, or holidays. The readiness of tour packages and supporting tourism products like merchandise and culinary items must maintain cleanliness,” he emphasized.
