Indonesia’s beaches have earned international recognition once again, with three destinations securing places among Asia’s best beaches in the 2026 Readers’ Choice Awards. Nusa Dua and Padang Padang in Bali, along with Gili Trawangan in Lombok, made the list, highlighting the country’s appeal as a world-class coastal destination.
As a maritime nation, Indonesia is home to an extensive coastline filled with beautiful beaches. Their inclusion in the rankings reinforces the country’s position among Asia’s leading best beaches.
The awards are part of the Readers’ Choice Awards organized by Condé Nast Traveler (CN Traveller), one of the travel industry’s most prestigious recognition programs. The annual awards cover various categories, including the best beaches in Asia and around the world.
For the 2026 Asia’s Best Beaches in the World category, Arugam Bay Beach in Sri Lanka claimed first place with a score of 98.84 out of 100. The destination stood out for its combination of world-class surfing, a relaxed atmosphere, and largely unspoiled natural surroundings.
Arugam Bay’s wide, clean coastline is a major part of its appeal. The weather during the dry season is also relatively mild, with less intense heat and infrequent rainfall. Together, these qualities help make the beach attractive to travelers seeking both outdoor activities and a laid-back coastal experience.
The rankings reflect more than just the appearance of a beach. Travelers also evaluated the quality and uniqueness of each destination’s natural landscape, including the characteristics of its sand and water and the variety of its coastal scenery.
The overall visitor experience was another important consideration. Local activities and community life contributed to each beach’s appeal, as travelers looked beyond scenic views to discover the atmosphere and experiences that make a destination distinctive. Authentic local culture was among the qualities valued in the assessment.
Environmental conditions also mattered. Natural beauty, conservation efforts, biodiversity, and accessibility were included in the evaluation, with beaches rich in biodiversity receiving positive assessments from travelers.
Indonesia’s strongest result came from Nusa Dua in Bali, which ranked fifth with a score of 92.93. The destination was praised by international travelers for its comfort and luxurious setting, particularly its emphasis on privacy. These qualities have helped establish Nusa Dua as an appealing choice for visitors seeking a more exclusive beach experience.
Bali secured another place in the rankings through Padang Padang Beach, which came seventh with 91.67 out of 100. Located behind the limestone cliffs of Uluwatu, the beach offers striking natural scenery and a well-established surfing culture.
Padang Padang has also gained international attention beyond the surfing community. Its popularity grew further after it became a filming location for the Hollywood movie Eat Pray Love, bringing the beach to the attention of a wider global audience.

Further east, Gili Trawangan in Lombok placed 17th with a score of 80.00 out of 100. The island offers a different experience from Bali’s more developed coastal destinations. Its freedom from motor vehicle pollution allows visitors to escape the noise and bustle associated with modern urban life.
The three Indonesian destinations each bring something different to the country’s beach tourism appeal. Nusa Dua is recognized for its comfort, luxury, and privacy. Padang Padang attracts visitors with its dramatic limestone landscape and surfing heritage. Gili Trawangan, meanwhile, offers a quieter island atmosphere away from motorized traffic.
Their inclusion in the 2026 rankings demonstrates the diversity of Indonesia’s coastal attractions, from sophisticated resort destinations to surf beaches and islands known for their relaxed pace of life.
