As Jakarta continues to evolve, the city is increasingly seen as a prime candidate for hosting major Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions (MICE) events on both national and international stages. The anticipated move of Indonesia’s capital to Ibu Kota Negara (IKN) could provide the momentum Jakarta needs to rebrand itself as a leading global MICE destination, capitalizing on its substantial potential.

At the Jakarta International Investment, Trade, Tourism, and SME Expo (JITEX) 2024, Sherly Yuliana, the Head of Marketing and Attractions at the DKI Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Agency, detailed the city’s future as a MICE powerhouse. She pointed out that Jakarta’s role as Indonesia’s economic center will continue to drive its development, positioning it as a major business, financial, trade, and service hub with regional and global significance.

“Jakarta’s potential is evident through its leadership in five key sectors contributing significantly to the Regional Gross Domestic Product (PDRB),” Sherly said. She listed these sectors as wholesale and retail trade, information and communication, manufacturing, construction, and financial and insurance services.

Budihardjo Iduansjah, Chairman of the Indonesian Retailers and Shopping Center Association (HIPPINDO), echoed these sentiments, highlighting Jakarta’s vast potential as a global investment hotspot and a source of local products from across the archipelago.

“Jakarta is not just about business; it also offers entertainment and leisure, making it an attractive destination for buyers and tourists who come here to shop, enjoy local food, and explore various attractions,” Budihardjo remarked. He also noted the introduction of the Jakarta Tourist Pass, which is designed to enhance the tourist experience and attract further investment in the city.

In addition, Vinsensius Jemadu, Deputy for Tourism Products and Event Organizers at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia, suggested that the capital relocation to IKN would catalyze Jakarta’s rebranding and repositioning efforts. The Ministry, in partnership with the Indonesian Exhibition Companies Association (ASPERAPI), is also working on programs to train and educate young professionals from various universities to become future MICE experts.

Sherly emphasized that Jakarta’s growing attractiveness as a global MICE destination is bolstered by its high standards in accessibility, amenities, and attractions. The city’s robust tourism sector includes 52,625 food and beverage establishments, 7,077 accommodation providers, 4,207 entertainment and recreation businesses, 4,594 travel services, and 6,075 MICE-related enterprises.

“With these resources and developments, we are confident that Jakarta is on its way to becoming a top Global MICE City soon,” Sherly concluded.
