President Joko Widodo has highlighted Indonesia’s current focus on the development of the downstream industry and green economy. The President made this statement during his attendance at the Hannover Messe industrial exhibition 2023 in Germany on Sunday evening (16/4/2023).

“Currently, Indonesia is implementing two major strategies, namely the development of the downstream industry and the green economy,” said President Joko Widodo in an official statement on Monday (17/4/2023).

Furthermore, the President explained that the policy to develop the downstream industry in Indonesia is supported by abundant natural resources, a demographic bonus, a large market, and a stable economy. According to him, these four factors are sufficient for Indonesia to become a major player in the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem industry.

In this regard, President Joko Widodo stated that Indonesia is very open to investment and cooperation in building downstream industries in the country. “Until 2040, there are 21 commodities in the downstream industry roadmap, projected to reach an investment value of US$545.3 billion,” added Joko Widodo.

Regarding the green economy, the President emphasized Indonesia’s strong commitment to maintaining environmental sustainability. This year, Indonesia is targeting 23 percent of its energy to come from new and renewable energy (EBT), as well as the closure of all coal-fired power plants by 2025.

On the other hand, the President acknowledged that Indonesia still has work to do to ensure that the energy transition can produce affordable energy for the public.

“Of course, this requires investment, significant financing, at least US$1 trillion until 2060. Indonesia invites investors from Germany to develop the green economy. Once again, Indonesia is very open to investment and cooperation,” he explained.

It is worth noting that President Joko Widodo, along with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, attended the opening ceremony of Hannover Messe 2023, held at the Hannover Congress Centrum in Hannover at 6:00 p.m. local time on Sunday (16/4/2023). The inauguration by both heads of state marks the beginning of the annual exhibition, which has been running for over 74 years.

The selection of Indonesia as the official partner country in the Hannover Messe 2023 technology exhibition in Germany will be a gateway for investment and the development of industrial technology innovations. In this exhibition, Indonesia has chosen the theme of “Making Indonesia 4.0”, with a focus on environmental sustainability initiatives and economic transformation.

Indonesia’s participation as an official partner country in the Hannover Messe 2023 technology exhibition is expected to strengthen Indonesia’s position as a strategic partner for Germany and Europe, especially in the field of industry, investment, and technology.

It is an opportunity for Indonesia to showcase its potential, especially in the downstream industry and green economy sectors, and to attract more foreign investment in the future.
