Tourists and travelers planning trips to Bali in late March and early April 2025 may need to reconsider their schedules. The rare overlap of two major holidays, Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr, could lead to significant congestion, particularly at ferry crossings between Java and Bali. Thus, authorities have already announced temporary port closures to accommodate Nyepi, which could impact travel plans.
The holiday overlap presents an unusual challenge. Eid al-Fitr, expected on March 31, coincides with Nyepi on March 29, creating a potential bottleneck for travelers. According to the East Java Communication and Information Office (March 11, 2025), ferry services will be suspended during Nyepi to honor the sacred Hindu tradition, which requires a complete pause in activities, including transportation.
This year’s Eid homecoming traffic is likely to be different from previous years. The peak travel period is expected to fall on March 27-28, just before Nyepi, which could cause heavy congestion at Java-Bali crossing points, particularly at Ketapang and Gilimanuk Ports. Authorities have been working to anticipate the surge and implement measures to prevent extreme delays.
Gilimanuk Port in Bali will also be closed from March 29 at 6:00 AM WIB to March 30 at 6:00 AM WIB. As a key entry point to the island, the closure is expected to significantly impact traffic flow. Many travelers will need to adjust their schedules to avoid long waits or being stranded.

To ease congestion, the Banyuwangi Regency Government and the River, Lake, and Ferry Transport Authority (ASDP) have prepared buffer zones for travelers. These designated areas will serve as rest stops before continuing their journeys.
Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani urged travelers to plan ahead. “These rest areas are available for travelers to recharge and regain energy,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of maintaining stamina and health during the journey.
Local authorities have also deployed personnel and healthcare workers to ensure smooth operations and assist travelers. With strategic planning, those traveling to Bali during this period can minimize disruptions and avoid unnecessary delays.
