Long before travelers set foot on Komodo Island, the sense of awe begins with the name alone. In 2026, that feeling gains global recognition. Komodo Island in East Nusa Tenggara has earned a place on the BBC list of the world’s best destinations for the year, joining a select group of locations celebrated for offering truly exceptional travel experiences.

The BBC selection focuses on destinations that go beyond visual beauty. The list highlights places that deliver powerful experiences, support local communities, protect the environment, and preserve cultural heritage. Komodo Island stands out within that framework.

“Rising from the turquoise waters of the Flores Sea, the Komodo Islands remain one of the greatest wildlife theatres on the planet, within this UNESCO World Heritage listed national park,” quoted from the BBC, Sunday (4/12/2025).

According to the BBC, the destinations chosen are not selected lightly. The process involved input from BBC staff, trusted journalists, and several leading global authorities on sustainable tourism.

“To compile this list, we asked for help from BBC staff, our trusted journalists, and several of the world’s leading sustainable tourism authorities,” the BBC stated.

Those contributors were asked to identify places that genuinely welcome visitors while creating positive impacts through tourism. From that global shortlist, the Komodo Islands emerged as one of the standout choices.

Travelers arriving in the Komodo Islands are met with landscapes that feel almost unreal. One of the most striking features is Pink Beach on Komodo Island, where stretches of pink sand meet rolling savanna hills. This beach gained international attention earlier when it was named the most beautiful beach in the world in 2025 by international travel experts.

“Pink Beach on Komodo Island features stretches of ‘rose’ sand where reef fish shimmer and starfish cling to coral gardens. Beyond the shoreline, green hills roll like velvet across the UNESCO-listed Komodo National Park,” quoted from the Forbes website, Sunday (14/12/2025).

The distinctive color of Pink Beach comes from a natural process. White sand blends with fragments of pink coral originating from microscopic organisms known as Foraminifera. As waves carry these coral fragments ashore, they mix with the sand and create the beach’s signature hue.

Quoted from Kompas, this phenomenon makes Pink Beach one of only a handful of pink sand beaches found anywhere in the world.

The appeal of the Komodo Islands extends far beyond its beaches. Beneath the water’s surface, coral gardens thrive and attract manta rays that glide through the currents. On land, the islands protect the last remaining population of wild Komodo dragons, which continue to roam freely in their natural habitat.

The BBC also highlighted Indonesia’s commitment to conservation in the region. The year 2026 will mark the 45th anniversary of Komodo National Park, a milestone that will be accompanied by new conservation programs and updated visitor management measures.

“In 2026, Indonesia will mark the park’s 45th anniversary with new conservation programs and visitor management measures designed to protect the sea dragons and fragile coral reefs,” wrote the BBC.

Accessibility has also improved. Direct flights from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur to Labuan Bajo, the main gateway to the Komodo Islands, have made the destination easier to reach for international travelers.

“Strict permits and ranger-guided journeys ensure that tourism revenue supports local communities and habitat conservation,” the BBC added.

Visitors to the Komodo Islands can explore the area by tour boats, stay at eco-lodges on nearby islands, or sail between secluded bays aboard traditional phinisi vessels. Each journey is designed to balance exploration with responsibility.

In the BBC’s assessment, Komodo Island is ideal for travelers seeking more than a holiday. It is a destination for those looking for meaningful experiences, deep connections with nature, and a travel journey that leaves a positive footprint behind.
