As Indonesia gears up for the long holidays of Isra Mi’raj and Chinese New Year in 2025, authorities in Jakarta are preparing measures to prevent traffic gridlocks. With millions expected to travel, the implementation of one-way and contra-flow systems will play a crucial role in ensuring smooth journeys for holiday-goers.
The one-way system, designed to ease congestion, directs vehicles to move in a single direction on specified roads. This method enhances safety and reduces bottlenecks, especially in heavily traveled areas. Meanwhile, the contra-flow system temporarily redirects one lane to accommodate vehicles moving in the opposite direction. This solution is typically employed during peak hours to manage surges in traffic.
Ahmad Yani, Acting Director General of Land Transportation at the Ministry of Transportation, emphasized the importance of these measures. “These traffic arrangements are essential to ensure smooth travel for everyone, prioritizing safety and creating a comfortable and secure journey for all,” he stated on Monday, January 20, 2025.

Flexible One-Way Implementation Unlike Contra-Flow
Unlike the scheduled contra-flow system, the one-way system will be applied dynamically. Authorities will assess real-time traffic conditions, traffic engineering indicators, and police recommendations to determine when it is needed.

Ahmad Yani assured the public that traffic management efforts are being carefully coordinated. “We, along with stakeholders, have issued a Joint Decree to ensure smooth traffic flow and prioritize public safety during the holidays,” he said.
By leveraging these strategies, authorities aim to balance traffic flow, minimize congestion, and provide a seamless travel experience during one of the year’s busiest periods. Whether heading to festive celebrations or enjoying a holiday break, travelers can look forward to a safer and more organized journey.
