The Indonesian Toll Road Regulatory Agency (BPJT) has recorded that during the administration of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), the construction of new toll roads in Indonesia has reached 2,000 km. This number is significantly higher compared to the previous five administrations of Indonesian presidents.

Those five presidents are Soeharto, Gus Dur, BJ Habibie, Megawati Soekarnoputri, and Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY).

The head of BPJT, Danang Parikesit, stated during a hearing with the DPR Commission V on Monday, March 28th, 2023, “During President Joko Widodo’s leadership period from 2014 to March 23rd, 2023, a total of 1,848.1 km of toll roads were built, or an average of 264.01 km per year.”

Based on BPJT’s data, during the 36-year period from 1978 to September 2014, only 775.41 km of toll roads were built, or an average of only 21.54 km per year. Meanwhile, during the first period of President Jokowi’s administration from 2015-2019, 1,298.3 km of them were built.

The breakdown of the construction during Jokowi’s administration is as follows: 132 km in 2015, 44 km in 2016, 156 km in the following year, 450 km in 2018, and the highest number of toll roads constructed, 516 km, in 2019.

Danang added, “Since 2020 to March 2023, there has been an additional 535.46 km, and it is targeted that by the end of 2024, 1,108 km of toll roads will be operational.”

Toll road construction is expected to continue until the end of 2024. However, as of now, it is recorded that almost 2,000 km of those sections have been constructed during Jokowi’s administration. When added to the toll roads built during previous administrations, the length of toll roads in Indonesia has now reached more than 2,000 km.

Danang further said, “As of March 2023, there are 70 operational sections managed by 49 toll road business units (BUJT), with a total length of 2,623.51 km. This is a significant increase compared to the end of 2019. It is targeted that by 2024, toll roads with a length of 3,196 km will be connected.”

This significant development in Indonesia’s toll road network has been made possible by the government’s continuous efforts to accelerate infrastructure development across the country.
