The government will revoke the sale of Research Octane Number RON 88 and RON 89 fuel oil starting January 1, 2023. The abolition is carried out because BBM type RON below 90 is considered unfit or dirty.

This abolition is contained in the Decree of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Number 245. K/MG.01/MEM.M/2022 concerning Amendments to the Decree of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Number 62.K/12/MEM/2020 concerning the Basic Price Formula in Calculation of Retail Selling Prices. Types of General Fuel Types of Gasoline and Diesel Oil are Distributed Through Gas Stations and or Fishermen’s Fuel Filling Stations.

This makes the fuel sold in the future only with an octane number of 90 and above.

“That the standard and quality (specification) of RON 88 gasoline (gasoline) fuel which is marketed domestically has been declared invalid as of January 1, 2023,” reads the letter and of the decision, quoted on Tuesday (25/10).

In the regulation, the government also regulates the basic formula for calculating fuel prices starting from the premium type. Meanwhile, the premium price calculation is only valid until the end of the year, and from 2023, there will be no more.

“The basic price formula for the type of gasoline (gasoline) RON 89 as stated in the attachment which is an integral part of this ministerial decree is valid until December 31, 2022,” the decree said.

Furthermore, Committee member of the Downstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Agency (BPH Migas) Saleh Abdurrahman said with the issuance of the policy only fuel with RON above 90 and above will be allowed to circulate starting in 2023.

“The bottom line is, below that, 87, 88, 89 can’t be circulated anymore,” he said.

According to him, the government is gradually transitioning to environmentally friendly fuel.

“We are gradually moving towards environmentally friendly fuel,” he said, Wednesday (26/10/2022).

In addition, Saleh also said that fuel with a minimum RON of 90 is actually more efficient and better for vehicle engines. This policy is also not solely given because of the G20 G20 Summit which will be held in Bali in November 2022.

“In this case (the ban on the sale of RON 88 and 89 fuel) our policy includes a reference to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry Decree No. 20 of 2017 concerning exhaust emissions,” Saleh explained.

BBM with a minimum of RON 90 is for example Pertalite, Pertamax, Pertamax Turbo, and others.
