Mount Rinjani in West Nusa Tenggara is a dream destination for hikers. Its stunning landscapes and challenging trails attract adventurers from around the world. However, for three foreign tourists, their latest visit to the mountain ended in a five-year ban. But what happened?
Authorities confirmed that the trio was caught trekking illegally on the Sembalun route in early March 2025. Their actions violated Mount Rinjani National Park’s closure, which remains in effect until early April 2025. The park was shut down to allow ecosystem recovery and due to hazardous weather conditions, including heavy rain and strong winds.
“The three foreign tourists attempted an illegal climb,” said Yarman, Head of Mount Rinjani National Park, as reported by Antara on Tuesday (March 4, 2025).
Park officials detected their activity through CCTV cameras positioned at Plawangan Sembalun. Footage recorded between Sunday (March 2, 2025) and Monday (March 3, 2025) clearly showed them on restricted terrain. “They entered an area that should have been respected during the temporary closure,” Yarman emphasized.

As a result, the three climbers are now blacklisted from Mount Rinjani for the next five years. They also face a penalty of IDR 6 million, equivalent to five times the normal entrance fee. This fine aligns with Government Regulation No. 36 of 2024 on Non-Tax State Revenue (PNBP).
Beyond the financial punishment, the tourists were required to sign an official statement pledging not to repeat the violation. “The sanctions also include a written declaration to ensure they do not commit the same offense again,” Yarman explained.
He stressed that this case serves as a reminder for all hikers. “Climbing is not just about reaching the summit; it’s about respecting the environment and following the rules,” he said. Yarman urged hikers and nature enthusiasts to be responsible and abide by regulations to ensure both safety and conservation.
Mount Rinjani’s closure remains in effect, and authorities continue to monitor access points closely. Travelers planning to visit are advised to stay informed and wait for official reopening announcements before setting off on their journey.
