After years of waiting, travelers can finally witness the spellbinding sunrise at Borobudur Temple once again. The long-awaited Borobudur Sunrise and temple climb experience has officially reopened for both domestic and international visitors, including students, offering a renewed way to enjoy one of Indonesia’s most iconic landmarks.
According to a press release issued on Sunday (October 19, 2025), the reopening is part of a broader initiative to enhance sustainable and inclusive cultural tourism. The policy aims not only to preserve Indonesia’s rich heritage but also to boost the local economy through high-quality tourism experiences.
Febrina Intan, President Director of InJourney Destination Management, said the decision to reopen sunrise access and daily temple visits comes in response to high global interest. The program remains in its trial phase and will be evaluated regularly. She emphasized that this initiative bridges conservation efforts with modern tourism development. Before setting a permanent schedule, the management will review physical impacts, visitor perceptions, and public feedback—ensuring every step aligns with conservation data.
“The sunrise-watching activity, which has been on pause since 2020, is a strategic step to bring back one of Indonesia’s most anticipated tourism icons in a more curated, limited, and special format, all guided by the principles of cultural heritage preservation,” she explained.
For visitors planning to experience this magical moment, the journey begins early. Guests should arrive at the Borobudur Unit Office and enter through Gate 7 of the Borobudur Temple Tourism Park at 4:00 a.m. Upon arrival, each visitor receives a flashlight, a pair of upanat (temple footwear), a tour guide, a souvenir, and a breakfast voucher.

At 5:00 a.m., participants can admire the sunrise from the temple’s ninth level, where the morning light slowly unveils the ancient stupas and stone reliefs. The experience continues with breakfast at Dagi Hill, where guests are treated to authentic local cuisine while enjoying panoramic views of Borobudur Temple and the Menoreh Hills—a serene moment that perfectly complements the early morning magic.
Tickets for the Borobudur Sunrise experience can be booked via WhatsApp at +62 857 2758 7800 or through the official website ticket.injourneydestination.id. Each ticket is priced at Rp 1 million for both local and foreign visitors, with a daily limit of 100 participants to maintain comfort and preservation standards.
To protect the temple’s ancient stones, all visitors must wear upanat to minimize direct contact. The management also carefully controls the flow of movement to prevent excessive pressure on vulnerable areas of the structure.
Through this well-curated reopening, Borobudur Sunrise is not just returning as a popular attraction—it’s reclaiming its place as a symbol of balance between heritage preservation and meaningful tourism experiences.
