Indonesia’s global allure as a tourist destination continues to shine, with April 2025 marking a sharp rise in international tourist arrivals. According to Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the country welcomed 1.16 million foreign tourists in April alone—an 18.26% jump from March’s 984,770 visits.

Even more impressively, the figure shows a 9.15% increase compared to April 2024, when only 1.07 million international visitors set foot in the country. This suggests a promising rebound for Indonesia’s tourism sector after a slight dip earlier in the year.

Tourist arrivals had been on a declining trend from January to March 2025. In January, the country recorded 1.16 million visits, which then dropped to 1.02 million in February and further declined in March. However, April reversed that trajectory with numbers returning to January’s level.

BPS Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics, Pudji Ismartini, confirmed the upward trend: “Cumulatively, from January to April 2025, Indonesia recorded 4.33 million international tourist visits, up 5.60 percent from the same period last year,” she said in Jakarta, as quoted by Antara on Wednesday (June 4, 2025).

Of the 1.16 million foreign tourists recorded in April 2025, 1.03 million arrived through main entry points, while 138,760 entered via border crossings. The top three sources of foreign tourists were Malaysia at 14.60%, Australia at 12.85%, and China at 9.15%.

The rebound is significant, especially as the country looks to maintain its appeal despite earlier signs of decline. The sharp increase in April is not only a sign of seasonal recovery but also an indicator of Indonesia’s resilience in attracting global travelers amidst fluctuating regional trends.

With Malaysia, Australia, and China continuing to lead the tourist influx, Indonesia’s tourism sector appears set for a stronger performance in the months ahead.
