Indonesia’s Vaccine Coverage Becomes One of the Highest in the World

The Covid-19 pandemic in Indonesia is showing a downward trend. The government has also revoked the limiting community activity regulation. However, WHO has not revoked the pandemic status. Therefore, the government continues to boost national vaccine coverage.

The government’s hard work apparently paid off. Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin revealed that Indonesia is included in the list of 5 countries with the highest Covid-19 vaccination achievements in the world.

“For vaccination, Indonesia is now in the top 5 in the world. We are under the United States, China, and India,” said Budi in a press conference, Thursday (5/1/2023).

Budi said that as of January 4, 2023, 448,721,254 doses of one to four vaccines had been administered to around 204 million Indonesians.

The achievement of the third vaccine or booster which previously experienced stagnation is now at 37.81 percent.

The high vaccine coverage is one of the reasons for Indonesia’s success in not experiencing a spike in cases of the new Covid-19 variant after the Omicron variant. The effectiveness of the vaccination rate in Indonesia has made the majority of people now declared to have immunity that is immune to the Corona Virus.

“This vaccination has succeeded in drastically reducing Covid-19 cases in Indonesia. The existence of waves of new variants after Omicron has apparently not caused a new spike in Indonesia,” explained Budi.

Furthermore, Indonesia has experienced two significant spikes in Covid-19 cases due to two variants of Covid-19. The two variants are the Delta variant which spreads in June-July 2021 and the Omicron variant in June-July 2022.

“The Omicron wave is actually the highest in terms of the number of daily cases, but relatively low in terms of hospitalization and death. Now the reproduction number is below number 1,” said Budi.
