Commuters in the Greater Jakarta area can now enjoy a faster and more seamless travel experience thanks to the new QRIS Tap system launched by the KRL commuter rail operator. This contactless payment method uses Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. It allows passengers to simply tap their smartphones at the station gate to pay for their trip. say no more to scanning QR codes or waiting in line!
Through its official Instagram account, @commuterline, KAI Commuter announced that the feature is already active in 83 stations across Jabodetabek and 17 stations in Yogyakarta. The company explained how easy the process is: “Commuter Line rides are now simpler than ever! Use your favorite payment app, choose the QRIS Tap menu, then tap your smartphone on the gate when entering and exiting KRL. Your balance will be automatically deducted according to your travel fare.”

Beyond the commuter line network, the QRIS Tap system is also expanding to other public transportation modes, including MRT Jakarta, LRT Jakarta, LRT Jabodebek, and Transjakarta for both BRT and non-BRT routes. This move supports the government’s goal of building a broader cashless payment ecosystem across Indonesia’s public transport sector.
To use the feature, passengers need to make sure their smartphones have NFC capabilities and that the function is turned on. After that, users can open their mobile banking, digital wallet, or any payment app that supports QRIS.
Once inside the app, select the QRIS menu and activate the QRIS Tap option. They can then choose their preferred payment source—whether it’s a savings account, e-money, or credit card—and confirm the transaction by entering a PIN. By simply holding the phone near the gate upon entry and exit, the system will automatically process the payment.
Each app may display different labels for the same function, such as “NFC Pay” or “Tap to Pay,” but they all work the same way.
With this update, the government hopes to encourage more commuters to adopt digital payments for daily travel. The QRIS Tap system not only offers a more efficient and contactless payment option but also promotes a cleaner, faster, and more convenient commuting experience across Indonesia’s public transportation network.
