A bold transformation is on the horizon for commuters in Greater Jakarta. Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has announced a visionary plan to make the entire Transjabodetabek network free of charge in the medium to long term. This move is set to revolutionize public transportation access across the capital and its satellite regions.
The governor’s plan will only be implemented once all Transjabodetabek routes are fully launched and operating at optimal capacity. To ensure the smooth execution of this initiative, Pramono is coordinating with regional leaders, including Banten Governor Andra Soni. He also plans to engage West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi in the coming weeks. These efforts aim to build stronger interregional collaboration for an integrated and affordable public transportation system.
“For Transjabodetabek, we plan to make it free in the medium to long term,” said Pramono, as quoted by Antara.
The Jakarta Provincial Government is now drafting a subsidy scheme as an early step toward offering free service. This subsidy will be introduced gradually, beginning with the rollout of six new Transjabodetabek routes. These new corridors must first demonstrate efficient operation before the free service policy is activated.
Although the governor has not specified an exact date for the policy’s launch, he has instructed the Jakarta Transportation Agency and relevant regionally owned enterprises (BUMD) to ensure that the entire Transjabodetabek network is completed by the end of this year.
Once fully implemented, the free ride policy will benefit commuters from various satellite cities and regencies such as Bekasi, South Tangerang, Tangerang, Depok, Bogor, and even Cianjur. The goal is to enhance connectivity across the broader Jabodetabek area and provide affordable alternatives for daily transportation.

Currently, passengers pay Rp 3,500 to use Transjabodetabek. However, early integration steps are already underway. Those who ride Transjabodetabek and continue their trip using Transjakarta do not incur additional costs.
This initiative builds upon Jakarta’s existing commitment to free public transportation. “Around 70,000 passengers each day are already enjoying free transportation in Jakarta,” Pramono explained. He believes the number will continue to rise once more routes are made available under the Transjabodetabek program.
The first of the new routes, labeled S61, connects Alam Sutera to Blok M and is already in operation. Five more routes are in the pipeline:
- PIK 2 – Pluit
- PIK 2 – Jembatan Baru
- Kota Wisata – Cawang via Jatiasih
- Binong – Grogol
- Jatijajar – Kampung Rambutan
Governor Pramono has also directed the President Director of Transjakarta and the Transportation Agency to carry out an aggressive expansion of Transjabodetabek. The aim is to reach areas that still lack sufficient public transport options and extend the benefits of affordable commuting to even more residents in Greater Jakarta.
This plan signals a shift toward more inclusive, integrated, and accessible public transportation in the capital region—one that could reshape how millions of people move around every day.
