Contactless payments are becoming part of daily life in Indonesia. A simple tap, or called QRIS Tap, is now enough to pay for a train ride or hop on a bus. Bank Indonesia wants that convenience to reach even more people in 2026. Including iPhone users.
At the center of this push is QRIS Tap. The feature allows payments through a tap in and tap out system. It was officially introduced at the Indonesia Digital Economy and Finance Festival in late October 2025. Since then, adoption has moved fast. But there is one clear limitation. For now, the feature only works on Android devices.
iPhone users, who rely on Apple’s iOS operating system, still cannot access QRIS Tap. Bank Indonesia is well aware of this gap. The central bank has made it clear that it wants the technology to be available across platforms.
“Going forward, we will continue to push so that iOS, Apple as well, opens its NFC, allowing iOS smartphones to use the QRIS Tap feature,” Filianingsih said during a press conference following the December 2025 Board of Governors Meeting on Wednesday (17/12/2025).
Despite the platform limitation, growth has been strong. In just over a month after its launch, QRIS Tap In Tap Out transactions surged. The total reached 508,000 transactions. Filianingsih also noted that 14 provinces have already adopted QRIS Tap for public transportation payments, showing how quickly local governments and operators are embracing the system.
Zooming out, the broader QRIS ecosystem continues to expand. By the end of this year, QRIS has been used by 59 million people. That figure exceeds the original target of 58 million users. Merchant adoption has followed the same pattern. The number of merchants using QRIS has climbed to 42 million, surpassing the 40 million target.
Most of these merchants are small businesses. About 90 percent are MSMEs. Transaction activity has also outperformed expectations by a wide margin.
“Transactions reached 13.66 billion, far above the target of 6.5 billion transactions,” Filianingsih said.

Looking ahead, Bank Indonesia has set ambitious goals for 2026. The expansion plan carries the theme 17-8-45, inspired by Indonesia’s Independence Day. Under this target, QRIS transactions are expected to reach 17 billion. QRIS usage is planned to expand to 8 countries. The number of merchants is projected to rise to 45 million, while users are targeted to reach 60 million.
On the ground, QRIS Tap is already being used across key transportation networks. Commuters can tap to pay on KRL, MRT Jakarta, LRT Jakarta, and LRT Jabodebek. The system also works on Transjakarta services, both BRT and non-BRT corridors.
With rapid growth, expanding coverage, and plans to bring iOS users on board, QRIS Tap is shaping up to be a core part of Indonesia’s digital payment future. The challenge now is making sure no users are left behind as the system continues to scale.
