Cianjur Earthquake Update: 271 Dead, 2,043 Injured

Indonesia is in mourning. The latest update states that the number of victims of the Cianjur earthquake continues to grow. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that 271 people had died as of Wednesday (23/11/2022) afternoon.

“We have identified those who died and matched data with the Ministry of Health at all hospitals and health centers where the bodies were correct. As of today, there are 271 bodies,” said the Head of BNPB, Suharyanto in an online press conference, Wednesday.

Suharyanto revealed that there were still 40 people missing. In detail, as many as 39 missing people came from Cugenang District, and one person from Warungkondang District. Therefore, according to him, some of the missing people may be unidentified bodies.

Meanwhile, the number of injured victims reached 2,043 people, and the number of displaced residents reached 61,908 people.

Then, as many as 56,320 houses were damaged. The damaged houses consisted of 22,241 units of houses that were heavily damaged, 11,641 units moderately damaged, and 22,090 units lightly damaged.

“This will continue to be verified. For houses that are being recorded, starting from the RT/RW, the village head has been ordered by the Regent to collect data on residents’ damaged houses,” said Suharyanto.

Not only that, 31 schools, 124 houses of worship, 13 government buildings, and 3 hospitals were damaged.

Furthermore, as many as 15 sub-districts were affected by the earthquake, an increase of 3 sub-districts from the previous day. Some of the affected sub-districts include Cianjur, Karang Tengah, Warung Kondang, Cugenang, Cilaku, Cibeber, Sukaresmi, Bojong Picung, Cikalong Kulon, Sukaluyu, Pacet, and Gekbrong districts.

“There are currently 15 sub-districts (affected by the earthquake), including the sub-districts of Cianjur, Cugenang, Sukaresmi, Cipanas, and others,” said Suharyanto.

As previously reported, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 centered in Sukabumi, Monday (21/11/2022) afternoon, was felt as far as Jakarta.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 6.86° South Latitude; 107.01° East, or to be precise, located on land in the Sukalarang area, Sukabumi, West Java, at a depth of 11 km.

At 13.21.10 WIB the Sukabumi area, West Java was rocked by a tectonic earthquake. The results of the BMKG analysis show that this earthquake has an updated parameter with a magnitude of M5.6.
