While mass tourism continues to attract the crowds, a quieter, more mindful form of travel is capturing the hearts of many. Known as slow travel, this approach emphasizes deeper experiences over ticking off destinations, and it’s reshaping the way people explore the world. Now, Kalegowa, a corner of South Sulawesi is stepping into the spotlight as a prime location for slow travel trend.

In its latest report, global travel platform Agoda named Kalegowa, a highland village in Somba Opu District, Gowa Regency, as the second-best destination in Asia for slow travel. This serene enclave trails just behind Rayong, a coastal city in Thailand, on Agoda’s ranking of top slow travel destinations across the region.

“Travelers today are leaning toward a slower pace,” said Akaporn Rodkong, Agoda’s Country Director for Thailand. “They want to focus on deep, meaningful experiences in one place, rather than rushing through several destinations.”

Kalegowa offers just that. Nestled about 10 kilometers from Makassar, the village sits on a quiet plateau, around six kilometers north of the Jeneberang River. It’s easily accessible within a 30-minute drive, whether by private car or public transport.

The village is surrounded by natural beauty—lush rice fields, rolling hills, and tranquil river streams. But it’s not just the landscape that draws attention. Kalegowa is also known for its strong local wisdom and cultural traditions that reflect a deep-rooted philosophy, making it more than just a scenic escape.

Agoda praised Kalegowa for striking a perfect balance: stunning nature, a calm atmosphere, and the warmth of its community. These elements, according to the platform, make it an ideal getaway for travelers looking to disconnect from city life and reconnect with a more grounded way of living.

“Our platform helps travelers find the best accommodations and activities to support travel at a slower rhythm,” said Akaporn, as quoted by Nation Thailand on Thursday, May 22, 2025. “That way, they can truly appreciate their surroundings.”

Agoda’s definition of slow travel revolves around quality over quantity—prioritizing longer stays, cultural interaction, and environmental awareness. Kalegowa, with its serene vibe and immersive local experiences, fits the bill perfectly.

The recognition also puts Eastern Indonesia more firmly on the map as a region rich in natural and cultural assets. Kalegowa now shares space with some of Asia’s most respected slow travel hubs, including Hualien in Taiwan and Gyeongju in South Korea.

For tourism stakeholders in South Sulawesi and beyond, the spotlight on Kalegowa is a reminder of what the future of travel could look like—slower, more intentional, and deeply connected to place. It also signals the importance of sustainable development to ensure that infrastructure growth does not come at the cost of authenticity or environmental harmony.
