Visitors planning a trip to Mount Bromo in March 2026 need to pay close attention to an important schedule change. The iconic volcanic Mount Bromo destination will temporarily pause all tourism activities for two days to observe Nyepi, the Balinese Day of Silence.
The closure will take place on March 19 and March 20, 2026. During this period, the entire Mount Bromo area inside Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park will be fully closed to visitors. The policy was introduced by the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority as a gesture of respect and tolerance toward Hindus observing Nyepi.
Septi Eka Wardhani, Head of National Park Management Area I at the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority, confirmed that the closure will apply to all tourism activities in the area.
“We will close the Bromo area on March 19–20, 2026 (Nyepi Day) completely. The area will reopen on March 21, 2026,” Septi said in Malang City, East Java, as reported by Antara on Friday, March 13, 2026.
According to information released by the park authority, the closure will begin at 00:00 WIB. Access to the area will resume at 12:00 WIB once the closure period ends. Officials emphasized that the measure is necessary to ensure that tourism does not interfere with the sacred atmosphere of the religious observance.
While tourism activities will pause during Nyepi, park operations during the Eid al Fitr period will follow a different arrangement. The authority plans to open the area only after the Eid prayer is completed. However, the exact schedule still depends on the government’s official announcement regarding the date of Eid al Fitr 1447 Hijri.
“If Eid al Fitr falls on March 21, 2026, we will open for half a day. After that, it will operate from early morning until five in the afternoon,” she said.

Authorities have also started preparing for the expected increase in tourist arrivals during the Eid holiday. Several measures have been put in place to ensure the area remains safe and well managed. These preparations include tighter monitoring across the park, inspections of public facilities and infrastructure, and coordination with multiple institutions. The park authority is working with the Indonesian National Armed Forces, the National Police, and local governments to organize security and operational procedures.
Mount Bromo remains one of Indonesia’s most popular natural attractions. During the 2026 Eid holiday season, the destination is expected to receive at least 5,000 visitors.
At the same time, another area within the national park will remain closed for safety reasons. The Ranu Regulo area is currently under a full closure with no set reopening date. Authorities made this decision due to extreme weather conditions that could pose risks to visitors.
The park authority will only reopen Ranu Regulo once weather conditions are considered safe and no longer threaten public safety.
“Because there are many trees there, we are worried some might fall,” she added.
