Flores Island, part of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), is not only known for its breathtaking natural wonders like Komodo and Padar Islands, but it is also making strides to become a notable religious destination. To attract religious tourists, the Labuan Bajo Flores Tourism Authority (BPOLBF) has launched a new Catholic religious travel pattern in Flores. This plan aims to highlight the spiritual and cultural richness of Flores, offering a unique experience for visitors.

On Friday, September 27, 2024, BPOLBF, in collaboration with several dioceses, introduced a comprehensive travel guide for Catholic religious tourism on Flores Island. The project, which was developed alongside the Diocese of Ruteng, the Archdiocese of Ende, and other local dioceses and tourism offices, sets out to expand Flores’ tourism appeal beyond its natural beauty.

Acting BPOLBF Director Frans Teguh explained that the new travel pattern is part of an initiative to provide visitors with a more holistic experience.

“We want to give tourists more than just nature and cultural tourism by offering them a deeper, spiritual connection with Flores through religious pilgrimage,” he said.

The pilgrimage will offer Catholic travelers a spiritual journey, allowing them to explore the island’s long-standing Catholic traditions. It also provides opportunities for different pilgrimage activities, further enhancing the tourist experience. According to Frans, the initiative is expected to make Flores a more attractive destination for religious tourism while strengthening its cultural identity.

“This initiative will boost Flores’ position as a key destination for Catholic religious tourism while preserving and showcasing the island’s spiritual heritage,” Frans added.

The travel pattern launch is considered a crucial step in merging spirituality with tourism. By doing so, the BPOLBF and local dioceses hope to offer meaningful and transformative experiences to visitors. The initiative is part of a broader commitment from the Catholic Church, the local government, and key stakeholders to develop Flores as a sustainable religious destination.

Father Yakobus Donnisius Migo, Secretary of the Diocese of Maumere, expressed his appreciation for the collaboration that brought the religious travel pattern to life. He emphasized that religious tourism offers more than just sightseeing but provides a chance to reflect on the deeper meaning of life.

“Religious tourism is about more than just enjoying the beauty of nature. It’s about contemplating life and deepening our relationship with God,” said Father Donni.

Ivan Botha, Head of the Ngada District Tourism Office, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the significance of the travel pattern in introducing visitors to Flores’ cultural and spiritual wealth. “This collaboration is a major step in showcasing the spiritual and cultural heritage of Flores,” Botha remarked.

Religious tourism, according to Botha, allows visitors to immerse themselves in the island’s beauty while also engaging with its rich traditions and religious practices. By combining nature, culture, and spirituality, Flores aims to set itself apart as a truly unique destination for tourists seeking more profound and reflective travel experiences.
