The Nusantara Capital City (IKN) project is progressing rapidly, with its key infrastructure, such as the much-anticipated IKN Airport, on track to bolster connectivity in Indonesia’s new capital. The airport is expected to begin serving commercial flights and open to the public by 2026, marking a major milestone in the IKN development.

Recently, the airport achieved a significant step forward by securing official international registration with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), earning the code “WALK.” This recognition is crucial for its operational readiness and international status.

Deputy Minister of Transportation Suntana highlighted that while 2026 is the target for commercial flight operations, achieving this milestone requires careful planning and phased implementation. He noted that the airport has the potential to support domestic, international, and cargo operations, depending on future needs.

“We’ll observe the developments over time. Like all airports, there are phases—starting with domestic operations, potentially expanding to international flights, and even incorporating cargo services as demand grows. It’s a dynamic and situational process,” said Suntana during an event at Monas, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (Nov. 14), as reported by detikfinance.

Currently designated as a Very Very Important Person (VVIP) airport, IKN Airport was initially planned to cater to state functions and high-level officials. However, transitioning it to commercial use would require revising Presidential Regulation No. 31 of 2023, which governs the airport’s development and operations.

Suntana acknowledged that regulatory adjustments might be necessary but emphasized that any changes would depend on progress over the next two years. He expressed optimism that the airport could begin serving the public by 2026.

“We’ll assess the situation over the next year or two. Changes can’t be rushed; we must ensure regulations are effective and relevant. Let’s hope this goal is achievable by 2026, and we’ll pray for its success to benefit everyone,” Suntana explained.

Meanwhile, construction efforts at the IKN Airport continue at full speed. Suntana reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the facility meets all operational requirements, including infrastructure, readiness, and legal status.

“Our focus remains on completing every aspect of the airport’s development—transportation infrastructure, operational readiness, and regulatory frameworks. We’re determined to meet the established targets,” he stated.

The IKN Airport, once fully operational, is expected to play a pivotal role in the new capital’s economic and logistical growth, reinforcing its significance in Indonesia’s ambitious vision for the future.
